The year is 2033. The world has been reduced to rubble. Humanity is nearly extinct. The half-destroyed cities have become uninhabitable through radiation. But the last remains of civilisation have already become a distant memory, the stuff of myth and legend.

More than 20 years have passed since the last plane took off from the earth. Rusted railways lead into emptiness. The ether is void and the airwaves echo to a soulless howling where previously the frequencies were full of news from Tokyo, New York, Buenos Aires. Man has handed over stewardship of the earth to new life-forms. Mutated by radiation, they are better adapted to the new world. Man's time is over.

A few score thousand survivors live on, not knowing whether they are the only ones left on earth. They live in the Moscow Metro - the biggest air-raid shelter ever built. It is humanity's last refuge. Stations have become mini-statelets, their people uniting around ideas, religions, water-filters - or the simple need to repulse an enemy incursion. It is a world without a tomorrow, with no room for dreams, plans, hopes. Feelings have given way to instinct - the most important of which is survival. Survival at any price.

VDNKh is the northernmost inhabited station on its line. It was one of the Metro's best stations and still remains secure. But now a new and terrible threat has appeared. Artyom, a young man living in VDNKh, is given the task of penetrating to the heart of the Metro, to the legendary Polis, to alert everyone to the awful danger and to get help. He holds the future of his native station in his hands, the whole Metro - and maybe the whole of humanity.

    Recently bought the Metro:Last Light game, and had to buy this book! After reading even through a few pages, I was in awe, at how well thought out this Novel was, and how perfectly executed they transitioned it into the Game!! Worth the Money, Time and Effort!!!

    Being a fan of the game series reading through the actual novel has provided a deeper insight to the desolate conditions of the metro system 20 years from now. This book has without a doubt reached my top 5. Just need to wait for an English metro 2034 and the novelisation of metro: last light. I'd give this 10 stars if it were possible.

    Read the book, buy the game. Or do it the other way round. ;) And the sequels are also pretty good. More of the same but an interesting view of a possible post-apocalyptic future.

    I decided to read the sample for this book after playing the 360 game. Having read through the first chapter I was hooked! The book has been translated from Russian to English, and has one or two sentences that need a second glance because of it, but this really is the only problem. Having read through books like Cell (Stephen King), and other stories with a post apocalyptic settings, this really was a breath of fresh air. The metro station setting is as terrifying as one would expect, damp, dark tunnels provide the suspense as the main character (Artyom) makes his way from one station to the next. All the time fighting off the terrors of his own psyche, the different political factions and also the the hideous mutations brought forth from the irradiated wasteland above. Pushed on by his mission to save his home station from the dark ones that terrorise its inhabitants. Artyom comes into contact with many different people on his journey, each rich with character and charm. And each with their own views on religion, philosophy and superstition. Really I cannot recommend the enough, well worth the price and well worth a second read through. It's just a shame no one has translated the second book (metro 2934) I honestly cannot wait for the next book published in English, metro 2035. A novelisation of the second game. So in conclusion, buy this book! If you have played the game and think you know how it ends,you really have only scratched the surface of this story and are doing yourself an injustice by not giving this a chance.

    Metro 2034 (book) is set to be released around the same time as the sequel to the first game, Metro 2033. Metro Last Light (2nd game), however, does not follow the storyline of Metro 2034. The translated version of Metro 2034 is coming out next year. So you all have to wait! Hope this helped!

    Enjoyed this book a lot. Played the game first and I don't think the game does it justice. Althought better then most book to games definelty worth a read.

    This is the first post apocalyptic book that I have read, and it was truly magnificent! I think that the ending was outstanding and very emotional, I would recommend this book to anyone. Praise to the author for writing this epic.
